Reywal is a collection of handcrafted, unique lighting installations. Poised in space, a Reywal merges lighting and art to illuminate in more ways than one. Each piece is a handmade and one-of-a-kind lamp as well as a work of art. Colorful threads are wound on a steel frame to give each piece its individual character. Playing with light as a metaphor, the threads filter the lamplight just as the light of consciousness is expressed differently in each person. Like people, each Reywal is unique and has its own item code to identify it.
The artist behind Reywal, Joy Stathopoulou, lives and works in Athens, a city that has experienced an explosion of creativity and artistic regeneration in the past decade. A lawyer by trade, Joy began to explore life from a different perspective, through crafting her striking lamps. In a sense deconstructing her identity as a lawyer and reweaving it as an artist, which is how the name of the project was coined – LAWYER spelled backwards: REYWAL. Her passion for colors, warm candlelight, and simple elegance informs her unique, yet timeless, creations and gave birth to Reywal. Her medium, the humble thread, evokes tradition and craft, yet expresses a thoroughly contemporary artistic sensibility in Joy’s hands.
A Reywal is a unique expression of light created to open up the possibilities for new perspectives. Created from the personal experience of the artist it is meant to connect with and enhance your personal experience, your space and your perspective. Its threads symbolize the connection between our past and our future and the ties that connect each unique individual to our shared humanity.
